Most letters of recommendation, including letters of recommendation for the Air Force, follow a similar format. Looking at a military letter example, you'll usually see three main paragraphs. The introductory paragraph explains the purpose for writing the letter and your relationship to the person you are recommending. After that, two additional paragraphs include details relevant to why you are making the recommendation and an explanation as to your confidence in the individual and the extent to which she is qualified for the position.
Coursera explains that you should draft your letter of recommendation on official letterhead bearing the name of your organization or military unit. Be sure to address the letter to the correct Air Force office and address the recipient by name if possible. Your letter should be addressed to the proper individual at the Air Force Officer Selection Board.
It's also suggested that you avoid the use of bullet point style recommendations. Your letter letter should be no more than two pages, and you should type your letter in a 12-point font.

Be sure to identify the position that the applicant is seeking and state that you are writing to recommend the applicant for that position. For example, you might be writing a letter of recommendation for sergeant positions.
Take care to explain the capacity in which you know the applicant. For example, be sure to state if the applicant was your employee, co-worker, student or subordinate.

Common activities you may wish to mention may include community service organizations, prior military experience, athletic activities or any experience managing other individuals. You also may list any personal attributes of the individual that you think are relevant to the position within the Air Force.
You should use your last paragraph to explain the extent to which you believe the applicant is qualified for the position, a description of the applicant's enthusiasm regarding the position and any illustrative examples. You may mention any personal stories or experiences that will bolster the applicant's chances of being selected for the position.
